Why Should Vegans NOT Eat Dairy?

Read this conversation between two friends sitting in a restaurant:

Jack: "Hey man, I am really hungry let's order something"

Dan: "I am ordering in chicken shrimps for myself, should I order Cheesy Nachos for you?"

Jake: "No I will not have Cheesy Nachos, can you order Salted Nachos for me?"

Dan: "Ok I get that you don't want to eat chicken or pork because animals were killed and blah blah, but what's wrong with cheese??"

I'll stop the conversation here, and bring you to the most raised questions by vegetarians and meat-eaters.

Why should Humans not drink milk or have cheese or butter?

Yes, the topic was supposed to be about Vegans not eating dairy, but we shall delve into why every one of us should refrain from it.

"Cheese is an amazing product when you think about it, it is probably the single best food for compromising on health" - What The Health.

Talk to anybody, and ask them why do you drink milk? Their first reply has to be "Because it is healthy, it makes bones stronger and contains protein and calcium". Clearly we are living in a land of misbeliefs and PR lead knowledge by the dairy industry. Let's discuss everything that is wrong with dairy and the industry:

1. Modern Dairy Farming is Highly Unnatural.

In the earlier days of dairy, a bull would impregnate a cow and the cow would go a natural birth cycle and after a complete 9 months, the farmer would wank its udders for the next three months to obtain milk and produce butter and cheese. Sounds completely fine.

But today's dairy farming is hideous and sinful. Modern dairy farms have hundreds and thousands of cows in cramped up areas. Cows are inseminated artificially in order to reproduce more and more. Female Calves are injected with growth hormones so they can replace their ancestors as fast as possible. What happens to Male Calves and bulls?

2. Buffaloes are the Raw Material for Leather & Veals.

Since only female cows can be used for milk production, what good are the male calves to the dairy industry? None. Now there are two options, they can either be used to production of Veals or they can be sent to the leather industry where they go through the same growth injection process to increase their surface area, so maximum leather can be cut off when the buffalo is at its peak size.

The Guardian published an article on How Killing a male calf was cheaper for the dairy industry than rearing them.

3. Dairy can increase risks of Prostate & Ovarian Cancer, Acne, Heart-Attack, and even Diabetes.

Dairy contains saturated fats that are responsible for the increase in cholesterol and heart diseases. As a result the American Heart Association does not include High Fat Dairy in recommendations for a healthy heart.

Milk and dairy products are linked to increased prostate cancer risk due to the hormone-insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I), saturated fat, and dairy calcium and protein. Acne may also be triggered due to IGF. An Article by Healthline lists Dairy Products amongst the top 7 foods causing acne in humans.

Just think, cows are put in crowded places where they are artificially made to milk more than normal cows would. They are inseminated, fed with growth hormones, and even anti-biotics if in case of illness that may arise during its lifetime. Where would all these harmful chemicals go? You'd be eating them.

4. Consumption of Dairy may increase the chances of Fractures.

Wait, What? How can that be? Doesn't dairy contain calcium and calcium is great for bones? True! Calcium definitely aids stronger bones. The National Osteoporosis Foundation explains that people need adequate calcium and vitamin D to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis. However, Calcium obtained through dairy may not have the best result when it comes to strengthening bones.

In one study, researchers tracked the diets, exercise, and stress fracture rates of adolescent girls and concluded that dairy products and calcium do not prevent stress fractures. Another study of more than 96,000 people found that the more milk men consumed as teenagers, the more bone fractures they experienced as adults.

5. Dairy is just not right! Use Your Common Sense.

Just think about it, Cow Milk is like breast milk which is to be had by cow calves or infants respectively. Why do we keep consuming it throughout our lifetime? Humans are probably the only animals who continue drinking milk even after adulting. There is a famous phrase that goes like "Not your mom, not your milk".

A calf that has 4 stomachs is meant to absorb and digest all nutrients that a cow's milk has to offer, but it may end up doing more harm to us than good. Why do you think most Humans are lactose intolerant?

6. Dairy Industry is Devastating for the Environment.

Anyone who has seen the 'Cowspiracy' documentary on Netflix would know about the negative impacts that dairy industry possesses. Cows consume a lot of water on a daily basis just to stay hydrated and healthy. A single dairy cow can drink as much as 150 liters of water per day. In 2018, there were approximately 9.4 million dairy cows in the US alone.

That is approximately 1,410,000,000 liters of drinking water every single day that is being used to hydrate dairy cows so they can produce milk.

According to the USDA, the waste from just 200 dairy cows produces as much nitrogen as the sewage from a community of up to 10,000 people. You can read up more facts about the impact of dairy on Cowspiracy's website.

7. World Hunger could be solved if the Dairy Industry shuts down.

Although cows are meant to graze on grass, in factory farms they are fed a mixture of water, grains, soy, and vitamins and minerals. Currently we are producing food for 10 billion people and even still we are not able to end world hunger. ( P.s The world population is 7.8 billion). All that food that should be for humans, goes to the dairy and meat industry.

Remember there are enough plant-based alternatives that have been proven to be healthy, nutritionally dense, and much more ethically manufactured.

According to RethinkX, a think tank run by technology, finance, and marketing experts, “by 2030, the U.S. dairy and cattle industries will have collapsed.”
